Neighborhood guide: Ostuni, Salento and Puglia

Ostuni is Puglia's "white city": a hilltop village on three hills overlooking the Adriatic coast. Salento, with its masserie, ancient olive trees and crystal-clear sea, is ideal for holidays combining nature, history and good food. Staying in a masseria or villa in Salento means immersing yourself in an authentic territory, between beaches, trulli and villages to discover.

How to get to Ostuni and Salento

By plane: Brindisi Airport (BDS) is about 35 km from Ostuni; by car or shuttle you reach it in 30–40 minutes. Bari (BRI) is about 1h by car from Ostuni and offers more connections; both airports have car rental and shuttle services.

By train: The nearest FFSS station is Ostuni (Bari–Lecce line); regional trains from Bari and Lecce. For getting around Salento, a car is handy: masserie and beaches are often outside the towns.

By car: The A14 (Bari–Taranto) and SS16 connect Bari to Salento; from Ostuni the coast (Rosa Marina, Pilone, Lido Morelli) is minutes away. Paid or free parking on the outskirts of Ostuni; the historic center is partly ZTL or limited traffic.

Where to eat: Puglian cuisine and masserie

Puglia is famous for oil, pasta (orecchiette, cavatelli), fish and vegetables. In Ostuni: Osteria del Tempo Perso, Porta Nova (views over the plain). At masserie you often dine on traditional dishes with home-grown produce. In the area: Cantine Due Palme (wine and food), Masseria Il Frantoio (Ostuni, farmhouse cooking). In Lecce don't miss the pasticcerie (pasticciotto, iced coffee) and the osterie in the center.

Beaches and coast: from Ostuni to Salento

The coast around Ostuni and Brindisi offers Rosa Marina, Pilone, Lido Morelli, Torre Guaceto (nature reserve, beaches and pine forest). Heading south into Salento: Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, Gallipoli, Pescoluse (the "Maldives of Salento"). Clear water, rocks and sand; in summer the best-known beaches are busy, but there are coves and quieter spots.

What to see and when to go

Ostuni: the white historic center, the cathedral and the narrow streets. Nearby: Alberobello (Unesco trulli), Locorotondo, Cisternino, Lecce (baroque and old town). Historic masserie are often open for visits or host restaurants and tastings. Spring and early autumn are ideal for weather and fewer crowds; July and August are perfect for the sea but in high demand: book ahead.
