Neighborhood guide: Venice and lagoon

Venice is a city like no other: built on water, with centuries of history as the Serenissima, extraordinary art and architecture. Staying in an apartment or palazzo in Venice lets you experience the city as a resident, away from hit-and-run tourism, with canals, alleyways and squares at your fingertips.

How to get to Venice

By train: Venezia Santa Lucia is the main terminal in the historic center; Frecciarossa and regional trains connect Milan, Rome, Bologna and other cities. Venezia Mestre (on the mainland) is cheaper if you're parking; from there the center is about 10 minutes by train to Santa Lucia.

By plane: Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is about 12 km from the center. Alilaguna (water bus) and ATVO/ACTV buses connect the airport to San Marco and the Lido. Treviso Airport (TSF) is used by several low-cost airlines: shuttle bus to Piazzale Roma (Venice).

By car: Cars cannot enter the center. Paid parking at Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto; in peak season book in advance. From there you continue on foot or by vaporetto (ACTV).

Where to eat: bacari and restaurants in Venice

Venetian cuisine focuses on fish, risotto and cicchetti. Bacari are the typical wine bars for a spritz and cicchetti (small tastings). Near Rialto: Cantina Do Spade, All'Arco. For a sit-down lunch or dinner: Trattoria da Romano (Burano), Antiche Carampane (San Polo), Osteria Enoteca San Marco. Avoid tourist menus in Piazza San Marco; better to venture into the calli for authentic food and fairer prices.

Lagoon, islands and beaches

The lagoon is part of the Venetian experience. By vaporetto you can reach Murano (glass), Burano (colorful houses and lace), Torcello (basilica and silence). The Lido di Venezia offers beaches and lidos; ideal for a day at the sea without leaving the lagoon. In summer connections are frequent; in winter check ACTV timetables.

What to see and when to go

Piazza San Marco, the Doge's Palace, the Basilica and the Campanile are the icons; the Biennale (art and architecture) draws visitors from all over the world. Getting lost in the calli of Dorsoduro, Cannaregio and Castello is the best way to discover Venice. Carnival (February) and Redentore (July) are very crowded: book well ahead. Spring and autumn offer magnificent light and fewer crowds; November can be foggy but atmospheric.
